Job Description Summary:

Shadow senior engineers to gain knowledge of how large enterprise network systems are installed, managed, and maintained. Learn about cable installs in buildings, including copper and fiber. Learn to configure switches, routers, and access points. Participates in Next Generation Aggie Network project meetings.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Use current systems to troubleshoot and document errors on the network and work with senior engineers to correct the issues. Participate in the Next Generation Aggie Network. Other assigned duties.

General Qualifications:

Knowledge of basic networking and PC use.

Enrolled for at least 6 hours in the Fall and Spring.

This position is on-site in College Station, Texas. 

Learning Outcomes:

Students will have knowledge of how large enterprise network systems are installed and maintained.

  • Gain knowledge of tools used to maintain and troubleshoot large enterprise networks.
  • Gain knowledge of how to operate in a multiteam environment.
  • Gain knowledge of how to manage time for multiple large projects.

The Network Technician II is responsible for assisting in the installation, construction, and maintenance of the University’s networks. Assists in network hardware installation, maintenance, and network troubleshooting. This position requires occasional supervision, guidance, and training. What you need to know

Other Requirements or Other Factors: May be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or on-call support.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree or equivalent technical school certification in electronics or telecommunications, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of related experience in the installation, construction, or maintenance of networks.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Background in construction and cable installation.
  • Exposure to various operating systems (Unix, Windows), network architecture, network protocols, office software and understanding of building and construction codes.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current building and construction codes.
  • Knowledge of copper and fiber networking cabling standards.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • BICSI Installer 1 Certification

Responsibilities:

Network Installations and Technical Support

Assist in the installation of unshielded twisted pair cable and fiber optic cables. Test and certify network components to required installation standards using various low voltage and light-source cabling testing equipment.  Assist with on-site planning of small network construction and cabling installations. Configure network switchports and diagnose installed LAN equipment. Maintain and replace legacy LAN infrastructure.

Administrative and Customer Support

Close out assigned service requests. Perform cable & switchport documentation. Schedule light carpentry and mechanical duties. Follow-up with customers via in-person/phone/email. Complete small assignments utilizing circuit records, network commands, and diagnostic facilities. Assist in the maintenance of documentation of installation activities and network connections. Document physical network changes for updating of network maps. Update supply/equipment inventory and network databases. Check for billing accuracy.
